My take

Continue is the pragmatic open-source answer for teams that want AI coding help without giving one vendor the whole workflow.

Its strongest point is configurability: editors, models, context, and team rules can be assembled around your existing engineering practice.

That flexibility also means the team must do product work internally: choose models, define context rules, and document how people should use it.

Adoption checklist

What would change my mind

I would raise Continue in the ranking if it consistently produces smaller diffs, clearer explanations, and fewer cleanup commits than the alternatives on the same repository. I would lower it if the first demo looks impressive but the team cannot explain the final patch, reproduce the workflow, or control cost and permissions.

Position in the 2026 stack

Continue should be judged by the job it replaces in the workflow. If it replaces autocomplete, the bar is speed and low interruption. If it replaces a junior implementation pass, the bar is reviewable diffs, readable reasoning, and clean rollback. Coding Agent Tools ranks tools by that practical fit, not by launch noise.
